Symptoms Worth Paying Attention To

A bad toothache can feel unbearable, and it’s natural to think pulling the tooth is the only way to find relief. We understand that discomfort, and our goal is always to get you out of pain quickly, but in many cases, there may be options that relieve your symptoms while still saving your natural tooth.

Let us know if you’re experiencing any of the following:

  • Severe or persistent tooth pain
  • Pain that gets worse when chewing or applying pressure
  • Jaw stiffness or discomfort
  • Swelling in the gums around a tooth
  • Signs of gum disease, such as discolouration, bleeding or bad breath

At Trinity Family Dental, our team, including Dr. Srikanth Lingamaneni, Dr. Hardik Patel and Dr. Kaustubh Gandhalikar, is here to help patients throughout Trenton find quick, lasting relief, whether that means saving your natural tooth or, when necessary, providing a comfortable extraction.

What to expect during your dental extraction

A dental extraction usually takes just one office visit and is performed by your dentist from start to finish. Here’s how the process works:

Exploring your options

Extraction may feel inevitable, but it isn’t always the only solution. Before recommending removal, we’ll examine your tooth and talk through your options to see if there’s a way to relieve your pain or infection while still preserving the tooth. Our priority is always to keep you healthy and comfortable, whether that means saving the tooth or moving forward with an extraction.

Removing the tooth

If extraction is the best path forward, a local anesthetic will be used to numb the area, with sedation available if needed. We use a gentle, minimally invasive technique to remove the tooth as comfortably as possible, helping you have a smooth and speedy recovery.

Supporting your recovery

Once the tooth is removed, we’ll walk you through aftercare instructions, including how to care for your mouth as it heals, what to expect over the following days, and what to do if you notice any complications. We’re always happy to schedule a follow-up appointment if you have additional questions or concerns.

Cost of a dental extraction in Trenton

The cost of dental extractions can vary widely. With a typical insurance plan, a dental extraction commonly costs about $100 to $200 out of pocket. We would be happy to provide you with a quote in advance to submit to your insurance provider to find out what your out of pocket costs would be. Without insurance, you can expect to pay approximately $150 to $600 or more per tooth, depending on the complexity of the extraction. The cost of a dental extraction will vary depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Whether the extraction is simple or surgical.
  • The location of the tooth in your mouth.
  • Whether any x-rays or additional imaging are required.
  • Whether sedation is needed in addition to local anesthetic.
  • The number of teeth being extracted.
  • Your current overall oral health.

Your treatment plan is tailored to your specific needs and can only be determined after an oral exam, so we’re happy to provide an accurate quote once we’ve had a chance to take a look. There are two broad categories that dental extractions fall under, which may give you a better idea of what your extraction may cost and why:

Simple tooth extraction

A simple extraction is performed on teeth that are visible in the mouth. These can be performed by a general dentist using local anesthesia. A simple extraction of an accessible tooth without complication typically comes with a lower cost estimate.

Surgical tooth extraction

A surgical extraction is more complex and involves the removal of a tooth that cannot easily be seen or reached, either because it has not fully erupted or has broken off at the gum line. A surgical extraction requires more consideration, delicate care, and expertise, which comes at a greater cost.

Your dental extraction consultation will include an examination of the tooth causing concern, as well as your surrounding teeth, gums, and overall oral health. We want to see how the tooth is affecting your comfort and the function of your whole mouth. Before we plan your treatment, we want to understand what’s going on and, most importantly, what outcome you’re hoping for, so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, a tooth extraction is not a painful procedure. Your dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic before starting, and sedation is available for patients who feel anxious or are having a more complex extraction.

Extraction is usually only recommended when a tooth can’t be saved through other treatments like a root canal or filling. Common reasons include severe decay, infection, advanced gum disease, a tooth that’s broken beyond repair, or overcrowding that requires extra space.

For the first few days, it’s best to stick to soft foods that don’t require much chewing, such as yogurt, oatmeal, eggs, soup, and smoothies. Your dentist will give you specific aftercare instructions based on your procedure.

Recovery time depends on the type of extraction and the tooth’s location, but most patients feel back to normal within a few days to a week. Simple extractions typically heal faster than surgical ones.

A dry socket occurs when the blood clot protecting the extraction site becomes dislodged, exposing the bone and nerves underneath. It can cause increased pain a few days after the procedure. Following your dentist’s aftercare instructions, such as avoiding straws and smoking, helps reduce this risk.

If you’re only receiving a local anesthetic, you can typically drive yourself home. However, if sedation is used, you’ll need someone to accompany you and drive you home afterward.

Depending on the location of the extracted tooth and your oral health goals, options may include a dental implant, bridge, or denture. Your dentist can help you decide whether replacement is necessary and which option best suits your needs.

Absolutely incredible experience every time we attend. The admin team is always friendly and helpful. They’re amazing with children and experienced with my health complications (prior Bell’s palsy). My daughter loved her visit with Sneha today for her cleaning. When we pulled up she said “Ohhh I love this place they’re my favourite dentist!” Dr. Patel has always made me feel comfortable even with my anxiety over dental pain. We’ve been going here for years and highly recommend the entire team.
