Are You a Good Candidate for Dentures?

Roughly 1 in 7 Canadian adults aged 65 and older have lost all of their natural teeth, making dentures a common and reliable solution. They’ve come a long way too, today’s dentures look so natural that you’ve likely met someone wearing them without ever noticing. Wondering if dentures might be right for you?

    Good candidates for dentures typically:

  • Are looking to replace several or all of their teeth.
  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco products.
  • Have a healthy jawbone (something we can help with if needed).
  • Don’t struggle with chronic dry mouth.
  • Are ready to commit to proper at-home care.
  • Plan to keep up with routine dental exams, just as they would with natural teeth.

Caring for Your Dentures

Even with well-fitted dentures, routine cleanings and exams are still important. During these visits, we’ll check how your dentures are fitting and take a close look at your gums, tongue, jaw and the rest of your mouth. Our focus goes beyond your dentures. We care about the health of your whole mouth.

A few tips for at-home denture care:

  • Take dentures out overnight to give your mouth a break.
  • Soak them in warm water, with or without a denture cleanser.
  • If your dentures have metal clasps, only soak them in plain warm water.
  • Store dentures in water when not in use to prevent warping.
  • Avoid soaking dentures in hot water.
  • Clean and gently massage your gums while your dentures are out.
  • If brushing irritates your gums, try a soft, damp cloth wrapped around your finger instead.
  • If you wear partial dentures, continue brushing your natural teeth as usual.

What Are the Costs of Dentures in Trenton?

Denture costs vary quite a bit from patient to patient, since there are several types designed to suit different needs. As a general guide, a single arch of dentures typically costs between $1,000 and $2,300, while a full set covering both the upper and lower arches generally runs from $2,000 to $4,500 or more. Partial dentures usually fall between $700 and $1,800 for a flexible option, or up to $3,600 for a cast metal partial. Implant-supported dentures are a bigger investment, often starting around $10,000 per arch and reaching $20,000 to $40,000 or more for a full set, depending on the number of implants and type of prosthetic used.

A number of factors go into determining your total cost, including:

  • The type of denture you need.
  • Dental extractions or other preparation required beforehand.
  • X-rays needed to plan your treatment.
  • Whether you choose implant support for added stability.

Because every case is unique, the best way to get an accurate picture of your options and costs is through a consultation and oral exam. At Trinity Family Dental, our team, led by Dr. Srikanth Lingamaneni, Dr. Hardik Patel and Dr. Kaustubh Gandhalikar, is happy to evaluate your situation and provide a personalized quote so you can make the decision that’s right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dentures are custom-made to fit the exact shape of your mouth, which takes precise impressions, skilled lab work and multiple fittings to get right. The materials used also need to be durable enough to hold up to daily wear for years, all of which adds to the cost compared to a one-size-fits-all solution.

Modern dentures are designed to closely match the size, shape and shade of natural teeth, so they blend in seamlessly. Many people wear dentures without anyone else noticing, especially with a well-fitted, properly cared-for set.

Most patients need a series of visits, typically starting with impressions and measurements, followed by a fitting to check comfort and appearance, and a final appointment to receive your finished dentures. The exact number can vary depending on whether any extractions or preparation are needed beforehand.

It’s common to notice some changes in speech at first, since your mouth needs time to adjust to the new fit. Most patients adapt within a few weeks, and practicing reading aloud or speaking slowly can help speed up the process.

Most patients can return to a fairly normal diet once they’ve adjusted to their dentures. It’s usually best to start with softer foods and gradually work back up to firmer or chewier items as you build confidence and comfort.

Yes, dentures typically need to be relined, adjusted or replaced every several years as your gums and jawbone naturally change shape. Routine checkups help us catch fit issues early, before they lead to discomfort or sores.

My daughter switched to this practice 2 years ago and has received amazing care by every member of the staff. In particular, she had a treatment done yesterday that was overwhelming for her, but Dr. Lingamaneni and his assistant worked with her throughout the process and kept her calm and comfortable. Absolutely incredible experience every time we attend. The admin team is always friendly and helpful. They’re amazing with children and experienced with my health complications (prior Bell’s palsy). My daughter loved her visit with Sneha today for her cleaning. When we pulled up she said “Ohhh I love this place they’re my favourite dentist!” Dr. Patel has always made me feel comfortable even with my anxiety over dental pain. We’ve been going here for years and highly recommend the entire team.
